Newsletter April 2010 Second edition
Students and Parents
We would like to take the opportunity to welcome all our new students. We hope that you have an enjoyable experience learning and growing with Seven Stars Karate.
The Seven Stars website is www.redhookkarateschool.com Our email is redhookkarate@gmail.com. Please feel free to email any questions or concerns.
Please log and join the site as a member. We will be able to keep you posted with updates, events, testing and future news. It is important to make sure all our students are able to receive emails for school information. This site is for Red Hook and Pine Plains Students. The newsletter will be on the site monthly to ensure each student has the opportunity to be involved with the school. With many students, taking different classes this is the most convenient way to ensure everyone is getting our updates. We will be posting pictures and videos from both Pine Plains and Red Hook. There is a forum for trading ideas members can join, get to know students and parents from both schools. This newsletter will have an attached sheet to complete and return as soon possible. This information is for our email database for newsletters and emails should class schedules change.
Each month the newsletter will have a vocabulary section. We find it important that students learn some of the basic language used in class instructions. The vocabulary page is also on the website and added to as time goes by.
This month we will be holding testing. Testing will be on the April 24th at Bard College at the Stevenson Gymnasium in the Aerobics Center. It will be starting at Noon (12p), and should be an hour to two hours long so expect class to run longer than normal. Please feel free to arrive at the normal class start time for warm ups. IN FULL UNIFORM!
We also have a class hike planned for April 25th to Stissing. Both Pine Plains and Red Hook students are welcome to attend. We will be meeting at 9:30 a.m. at Bard College Gym in the back parking lot for assembly and sign up. For more information or intentions of participating please email or call Mr. Siler. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend.
We know that the new “Karate Kid” Movie will be coming out in June. We think it would be fun if we have a group of students and parents and age appropriate siblings attend the movie together. We are planning to have a pre-sign up sheet and collection of ticket fees ahead of time so tickets are purchased in advance ensuring we all have a seat. We are planning to attend a matinee to keep costs down for parents with multiple kids. The movie comes out on June 11th and it should be a fun time. We will have more as it gets closer. It will be at the Lyceum in Red Hook. All Pine Plains and red hook students are welcome to sign up.
As the weather, gets warmer we would like to see the students in uniform however with heat concerns a white t-shirt and uniform pants with your belt will be appropriate on very hot days. Use your best judgment.

SEVEN STARS
July 09 Kicking Newsletter
Parents and Students
This month we will be holding testing. Testing will be held on the July 18th at Bard College at the Stevenson Gymnasium in the Aerobics Center. It will be starting at Noon (12p), and should be an hour to two hours long.
IN FULL UNIFORM!!!!
STUDENTS:
Be sure you are practicing outside of class hours the teachers can see who has been practicing and who hasn't been. We all understand you have a life outside of karate and how hard it can be to keep up on our forms, one steps, and hand self defense. But make it a self discipline of yourself to set aside 10 to 15 minutes a day and practice all the material for your belt rank. Yes as you get higher in rank, you will have more that you will have to practice so you will eventually need to set aside more time. Don?t fret. It is time well invested in your martial arts training.

SEVEN STARS NEWSLETTER
September Edition 2008
Dear students and parents
That time of year is upon us, back to school. For the children it means summer is over, for the parents a welcome return to normal routines. That time of year also offers one to the most beautiful time of the year in the northeast.
It is an especially wonderful time to reconnect with beauty of the outdoors. A weekend walk or hike can renew the soul. As outdoor training goes for those of us in the karate world, it just does not get any better. The smells of fall and the cooler temperatures make outdoor training very memorable.
I have been doing karate for 27 years and always look to the fall, as the harvest of the past years training. In our martial arts, training of Tang Soo Do the white belt reflects the season of winter, or ?hidden potential?. The orange belt the ?transition? form winter to spring. The green belt ?new growth? in springtime. The red belt the ?blossoming? of summer and the midnight blue the fall and harvesting of the training. These cycles continue to remind us of our growth. It is important to remember the there will be times when it seems like we are making little progress. It is important to continue to train through this. Just as when planting a seed and it does not seem to be sprouting quickly enough. We grow impatient. It is important while waiting to remember to water the seed, if we forget it will never sprout. And so it is with our training. Do not focus on the end result, but more important to remain focused on the journey. There is an old Chinese saying, ?With one eye on the destination, there is only one eye with which to follow the path?. The journey in martial arts training brings many rewards, but minus the belts and other trappings, the true spirit is felt more than seen. You can describe what sugar tastes like, but to truly know, one must taste it. And so it is with karate, it must be experienced. If successful, a better understanding of your world and your self will emerge.
Mr. Siler has been asked to attend the World Open Championships again this year. It will be held in Seoul, Korea on October 7th through the 14th.
Mr. Siler is one of the members of the U.S. delegation to instruct at seminars while in Korea. In Korea, Mr. Siler will also be visiting Grandmaster Huang Kee?s original school and doing some training with several of the current Masters teaching there. He will be sharing this experience with us upon his return.
Any student interested in the Catskill Mountain Railroad trip please relay your interest to Mr. Siler. He would like to make a daylong trip with a train ride through the mountain, a picnic, and some outdoor training. Please let him know if you are interested in attending. Plans will be solidified when he has an idea of how many students and family member would like to go.
The Seven Stars website is up www.redhookkarateschool.com
Please log in so we can keep you posted with updates, events, testing and future news. Our newsletter will be posted there monthly as well, but printed letters will be available to those who d not have internet access. If you would like to add something to the site, or like to share pictures or videos please feel free to let us know. We also have a family friendly seven stars forum for our students and parents to communicate with each other whenever they have a question, concern or just make contact with other parents. There are safety procedures in effect and the board is monitored for that reason, but it can be a fun friendly way for our students to talk back and forth while class is not in session in a safe way. Please be advised that it is still a work in progress and as time goes by more fun and information along with community events will be added.
Have a Great Month
